5 Dog Grooming Tips for the Winter Season

RAFFI OHANIAN • December 10, 2021

Winter dog grooming should be done just as often as summer dog grooming, as a healthy coat is vital for your pet’s comfort throughout the seasons. A healthy coat is similar to a thermos in that it keeps the heat in during winter and out during summer. To help your dog maintain a healthy coat throughout the seasons, here are five dog grooming areas that require special attention when the weather turns chilly.

5 Dog Grooming Tips for the Winter Season

1. Clean ears.

Cold weather and snow can cause moisture in the ears. Clean out your dog's ears to keep them from developing infections.

As dog groomers, we find that dogs with long ears are more likely to have ear problems than dogs with shorter ears.

In addition, like humans, dogs have ear canals that usually have hairs that stick out that can get caught in the ear. These stuck hairs must be removed so they don't become impacted.

2. Nails.

Keeping your dog's nails trimmed is vital to their health and safety. Long nails can increase the likelihood of your dog getting injured by kicking or scratching themself.

For some dogs, the sight of nail clippers is like a shot of fear running through the veins. We recommend practicing nail trims on the leash, rather than letting them chase a ball or toy to get them used to it.

Dog groomers suggest clipping the nail on an angle, not straight across.

While there are a lot of myths out there about how dogs should have their nails trimmed, the truth is that it's important to do it regularly, regardless of which method you choose.

3. Clean teeth.

Proper dog grooming not only includes cleaning your dog's teeth, but also discussing with your vet the benefits of a dental cleaning.

Cavities in dogs can be painful and can lead to other issues, so it's important to check them and clean them regularly.

4. Bowels.

Dogs can become constipated while they are in their vernal or winter sheds.

This is because as the weather changes, their metabolism slows down. This can be a problem for dogs that are on low-quality food or are eating the same food every day.

If your dog has a sensitive tummy, you should pay special attention to what you feed them. Some dog food doesn't agree with a dog's system and causes them to become constipated.

5. Coat.

Brushing your dog's coat is particularly important during the winter. This helps with shedding, keeping the coat clean, and keeping mats and tangles out of their coat.

Most dogs shed twice a year, which is why it's important to brush their coat before and after the shedding season.

If you have questions or concerns about the health of your dog's coat, don't hesitate to talk to a qualified dog grooming professional.

A Carlisle, PA mobile dog groomer explains how we safely take a pelt off a dog, when to demat vs. shave, and why a vet visit sometimes comes first. TL;DR. A real dematting visit takes longer than a normal groom and sometimes ends in a vet referral instead of a haircut. If the mats are pelted to the skin, we shave it short and start the coat over. We don't sit there pulling a brush through a screaming dog for two hours.

A working groomer breaks down the mobile dog nail trim visit in Mechanicsburg, PA, the grinder-paw-quick technique, and when your dog should see a vet first. Q uick answer. A mobile dog nail trim happens in a temperature-controlled van parked in your driveway, lasts 10 to 20 minutes for most dogs, and uses a grinder instead of clippers. The dog stays on a non-slip mat, in a quiet space, with no waiting room and no other animals. Less stress, fewer quicks, calmer dog at the door when you walk back inside.
